Week Three, Discussion Question # 2

Jazmine Navarro

In Hemphill’s, “Commitments,” he paints the picture, in which he does not really feel there – as if he is just going through the motions. He is a family barbeque but he does not feel at home – he feels different than them. An example of this is, “expecting to throw rice at me someday.” In reality, they will not really be able to throw rice at him, because same-sex marriage is not legal (well in most states it is not.) He is not what is expected of him – a straight man who can have the “normal” life, which includes a wife and children. Everything around him is perfect, but himself. He is the one that stands out, he is the one who is “atypical”, and therefore he is the invisible son.
