Week Four, Discussion Question # 8

Jazmine Navarro

I think this reading of “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” is very problematic. It is essentially saying that girls should not express their sexuality, but instead keep it all locked up. There is nothing wrong with expressing one's sexuality and there should not be repercussions for doing so. Regardless of how forward anyone is it does not give someone else the right to scare, hurt, or intimidate people. Sure, Connie may not make the wisest choices but she is allowed, without fear, to experiment and come into her own – sexually and non-sexually.

  1. Yes, I must agree with the fact that this story is talking how girls should not express their sexuality, but keeping it to themselves only. I believe that Connie was just a happy girl, she knew she was good looking and that everyone would always look at her. She liked the attention from anyone that passed by and she made sure that she always looked amazingly good. There is nothing wrong with making yourself look decent. The only problem in that would be getting attention from strange men, and that is when a pretty girl needs to watch how she expresses her outward appearance.
