Week 2, question 1

Confessional poetry is poetry that is personal and autobiographical. It openly discusses private feelings and personal experiences such as fears, relationships, depression and death. Confessional poetry received a lot of criticism because of it strait forwardness. Sylvia Plath is a well known poet for her writing of confessional poetry.
In the poem "Daddy" Plath reveals her emotional struggle with her father's death. She goes deep into her herself and expresses all that she feels. She describes the hurt and anger she feel against her father. This poem fits well into the genre of confessional poetry because she openly discusses her feeling about her father.

  1. I do understand how confessional poetry can be considered personal and autobiographical, however I think that word 'confessional' gives it a more literal meaning. That meaning being a way to vent or release one's emotions. It it specifically apparent in Plath's "Daddy" how this could be true. Through the poem Plath shares with the audience her deepest feelings, like suicide and reasons behind marriage and her life in general, almost as if it was her confession. A way for her to get things off her chest and vent to the world. Confessional poetry offers the opportunity to say whatever you feel in a way so that there is no judgement or disapproval from those who are confined in; expression without repercussion. We must consider that an author's story can be presented in really any type of poem. Thus the idea of a confessional poem needs to have something to separate it from the pack and create individuality in every expression; which could be the deepest darkest feelings an author needs to relay.
