Week 1, Question #3

In What We Talk About When We Talk About Love by Carver, love is discussed by the four friends in many different forms. We see the passionate dangerous love that Terri experienced with Ed, the comfortable love between Mel and Terri, the new and exciting love between Nick and Laura, and the love gone wrong between Mel and Marjorie. This selection does not challenge my beliefs about love because I don't believe that there is one single definition for love. Love is a concept that means something different for everyone. Mel did not believe that Ed loved Terri because of the way that Ed abused her. While I agree with Mel that the kind of things that Ed did to Terri are not things that you do to a person you love there are people like Terri who believe that people can hurt you like that because they love you and don't know how to express their love. The kind of love that we see between Mel and Terri is what I believe most people share, quiet companionship. Nick and Laura have only been together for a short period of time and they are enjoying the adventure of the new and exciting which is what everyone experiences at one point or another in their relationship. Can it last forever? Anything is possible.
