"The love song of J.Alfred Prufrock" is a very complex poem to understand. I found that by reading the critical context that it gave me a much better understanding of the story. The context explained thoroughly many aspects of the story such as the meaning behind the title, interpretations of different lines and the overall theme of the story.I feel like I understood the story much better after reading the interpretations. It helped me to see the meaning behind the story.
Out of the three critical context I chose "Prufrock Road to Love is Paved with Irony" by Melinda Hollis. I felt that Hollis interpreted the story well. She made the most sense to me. I agree with how she interpreted story. She described Prufrock as a fearful, self-critical and lonely man, that is how I saw him in the story.

i have to agree with you on melinda Hollis interpertation that it gave me more understanding and provided a clearer explanation of the story. i think the man has a conflict within himself. His self esteem is low and he does not have the courage to ask the womne to marry him. i think he is creating a world that does not exist.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the poem was very hard to understand without the interpretations. I would not have thought he was talking about marriage. While I can see how it could be understood to be about marriage, I have to agree with Hayman's interpretation that it was about a sexual proposition. As Hayman points out, Prufrock mentions her bare arms but not her face. If he wanted to marry her I think he would have mentioned more about her like her facial features or her personality.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree with all you guys. The poem is really hard to understand without proper interpretation. People who interpret the poem says that the main dispute is wether or not Prufrock is trying to tell a women his interest for her. It is a complicated poem that needs a lot of careful reading. The last few lines of the poem Prufrock focus on various images of women's arms and clothing so these are some of the clues that we can get and interpret.
